 Bad Design in So Many Ways... September 6, 2010

We owned a Procter Silex coffeemaker that worked well for many years. When it died, we bought this one. What a mistake. I don't know what their product designer was thinking, but it clearly wasn't normal, practical use. Here's what I think is terrible:
- The markings on the carafe can only be read easily if you are left-handed. I assume the vast majority of people are right-handed. Why not put markings on both sides of the carafe.
- The well you pour the water into only has a small opening and one of the electronic components runs through it. If you miss in your aim the water spills into the open hot plate area (the old model was designed so that there was a substantial well opening).
- The markings on the water level indicator on the coffeemaker (not carafe) are impossible to read and it's impossible to see where your water level is - so you can't tell how many cups of coffee you're making.
- Equally lacking in visibility is the clock. How in heaven's name can you set an auto coffeemaker if you can't read the gosh darned clock. It's a black display on a murky seasick green background - so no contrast (the old coffeemaker we had from P.S. had a nice bright red luminous display).
- The coffee flavor intensity adjuster on top of the machine is a phoney. It's just a little tab that's not connected to anything and just spins around, but tries to give the impression you can adjust how hearty (or not) the flavor intensity of your coffee will be.
- I think our old P.S. machine produced much better tasting coffee too.
I don't know if all these changes were cost-cutting measures or just ignorance to good design or both. But I'm thoroughly disgusted with the quality and out searching again for another machine. What a waste of money!

For the most part the coffee pot is great... It definitely does make hot coffee which is great (well not during this overly hot summer) but it's nice. I had thought it had a cone filter but it is a basket filter which is fine, you can set the darkness of the coffee and it does make a difference as I accidentally made it really weak once. It seems to stay in place on the counter. The only drawback that I have is that sometimes if you pour too quickly it spills, so I've learned to go really slowly. I've also used it to make tea and don't have a plastic taste in my tea.

The coffee maker is fine, except in one important aspect. When pouring out the hot coffeee, the lid tends to open, allowing very hot steam to reach your hand. To prevent this, you need to pour very slowly so that the angle of the pot is minimal.
I actually wonder why the coffee maker does not come with a warning, as there is a serious potential for injury.

I recently bought a Proctor Silex #48574 to replace a Proctor Silex Morning Maker #42464, which just stopped functioning one morning. The Morning Maker was wonderful and we got a lot of compliments on the coffee we served from it. After trying and failing to find the exact same model, we bought the #48574. The new one is very pretty, but has a few design flaws and so far, even with expensive coffee, the results are not as good. The basket is stationary (does not swing out) and is surrounded by a semi-circle of space leading to the water chamber, and the raised lid gets in the way, so you have to have a steady hand when filling with water. The space at the front is about ¾" and increases to about 1-1/2" at the back. I have a steady hand, but still use a funnel to fill it. I have to move the pot forward to fill because the top is 8" tall instead of the 4-1/2" in the Morning Maker, so in order to clear the cabinets, I have to move it to the edge of the counter. The brew selector is loose, so you have to be sure to set it each time you make coffee, since it does not click in place but just slides loosely around, and will change as the top is opened each time you make coffee. It pours nicely, but when you get to about the last cup and the pot is tipped steeply, the top flops open and the steam hitting your hand as you pour could cause a problem. The shape of the pot probably keeps the coffee hot better than the Morning Maker pot, which is the standard more square shape. The pause feature says you have only 20 seconds to remove the carafe until the brew basket overflows, so I advise not to try to take a cup before the brewing has finished. I would have continued buying the Morning Makers and I am disappointed that they are no longer available.

This coffeemaker comes with everything you need except the coffee. It has a permanent filter and a coffee scoop. It is programmable and you can adjust the coffee brew strength. It just makes the best coffee!
This is the second one I bought... I took my first one to work so I can have coffee anytime I want it.
The only two things that could be better is you have to be careful pouring or you will make a mess. And the one I just bought, the carafe only has cup markings on the side for left handed people (which is a bit annoying). My first one has the markings on both sides, so this may just be an unintentional defect.
